Call for Free Tire Pumps on Every Fuel Pump Print E-mail
Thursday, 04 September 2008
It is true that under-inflated tires waste energy by increasing drag the engine must overcome. In many cases the savings can be well over 3%-5%.  Therefore we must make it super easy for consumers to check and add air to their tires every time they fill up with fuel. This can be accomplished by mandating that each fuel pump also have a tire pump built into it or immediately adjacent.

These simple air compressors should be easy to use and have high quality air-chucks with pressure gauges on them. Using the air pump should be free to all drivers but especially when purchasing fuel. The cost of including these pumps and their maintenance should be included in the price of the fuel so consumers know they have already paid for it in the fuel transaction, eliminating the need to find quarters or enter codes.

To increase usage technology could be employed to insure that the pressure gauge is used to check pressure on at least four tires before the fuel dispenser will operate, but even just making it available and easy for consumers would be a significant step to reduce waste.

Take action now with a letter to congress.
